A NEW ASSIGNMENT

COPPER EMBOSSED SCULPTURE W/ STITCH
INTERMEDIATE 3-D ART
copper sheet metal, propane torch, machine stitching, india ink, felt & misc. embellishments

I found this project in a crafts magazine and it looked like fun;
a great way to combine several media.
So I asked my 2nd year kids if they'd mind being guinea pigs.
Overall,
we all felt it was an OK project
where they were able to combine several techniques they'd learned throughout the year,
but nothing special.
Will I teach it again?
Nah.
But let's take a look at what the kids came up with anyway.

Senior Bianca Tolentino had time to make two pieces.
My favorite part are the twigs that she wood burned,
along with the contrast between the copper and wood pieces.
It's really appealing to the eye.
Some close-ups.

Senior Daphne Chiang thought to mount her pieces on an ink washed backdrop.
I really like that she brought in some windfall.
It compliments thru color and texture.
Daphne also was able to achieve wonderful patinas on her copper pieces
by passing them thru the propane torch.

And senior Kaili Hamada turned her pieces into a delicate mobile.
To highlight her cool embossed designs she stained the embossed areas with india ink.
That and the decorative machine stitching in black,
really helps to pull all designed areas together.

  1. I agree ... interesting, but just not quite there. Still, I do very much like the embossing on copper.
