Well,

we've come to the end of seeing the artwork from the 2nd Quarter 7th graders from last school year.

These were their Final

and there were so many exceptional ones in the bunch.

This assignment requires 3 class periods to complete.

One day to lay and flick the watercolor down in a Color Scheme they can name,

and 2 hours during Final testing to outline their found creatures,

then Zentangle them in.

These are each so very unique and whimsical.

7TH GRADE ART WHEEL - 1ST QUARTER - 2017-2018

I'm sure all you art students have noticed I've taken a rather long break 

from posting your pieces this summer.

This seems to happen to me every summer.

Just needed a bit of time off to decompress from the very busy school year.

But as August draws near,

I'm back to it and will try to blog everyday to finish off this past school year.

This was the 7th graders 1st Quarter Final,

these fabulous Blob Animals,

inspired by illustrator Carla Sonheim.

Each child had to pick and be able to name their color scheme before they started.

They also had to add a bit of Zentangling as well as a lot of crazy creatures.

In this eye catching piece above by Eileen Rodriguez Salehi,

she has chosen a Primary Scheme which when worked Wet over Wet,

mixes and brings out all the other colors on the Color Wheel.

The next delicate piece above was done by Emily Ahn in an Analogous Scheme.

 And Aniket Chaudhry above used a Neutral Scheme,

 putting in so much coolness to find within his drawings and Zentangling.

David Song,

using an Analogous Scheme,

 gave me all his effort and superb craftsmanship.

I love how all his separated pieces connect in his drawing.

Reya Syed based her designs on a Harry Potter theme,

and I love how she designed everything to loosely float on a diagonal.

It creates so much movement.

Both Serena Lee and Eva Matentsiann used an Analogous Scheme with their blue and purples,

yet each looks so different.

Serena's is bold and striking,

while Eva's is soft and sophisticated.

Check out her use of Pointillism as well within her drawing.

Well done young ones.

It's time to say farewell to all my 2016-2017 7th graders.

This will be your last post before I start with this years young ones.

So many of you have such a special place in my heart, 

and I've never had so many of you return for an 8th grade year with me.

It's so very poignant to look back at these young pieces

and to now see the maturity you have gained in such a short amount of time with me this year.

And to also see how much you've grown as artists.

It was a pleasure to get to know all of you.

Well,

this is my fond farewell to you,

my 2nd Quarter cuties.

So many of you have so much artsy fartsy in you,

 and I hope you will be back next year for more art classes.

And if not next year, 

when you have room in your 11th & 12th grade years.

Let's take a look at how you put all your learning into your final.

Loreinice Zilabbo  & Janice Ji both chose to work in a Primary Color Scheme.

What's really "spicy" (Eric  :) when you do that with watercolor and use this wet into wet technique is the 3 primaries mix and create secondaries, intermediates and brown.

The whole color wheel plus its neutral.

Loving these!

Super sweet Emma Bertel,

took a really cool approach to this design.

She was able to figure how how to interconnect all her creatures which impressed me greatly.

And Felica Hildago & Samantha Catacutan 

both chose to work to the Cool side of the color wheel for one really soft & atmospheric design,

and one really intense and striking design.

And then there is Siddhant Watwani who surprised not only himself but the rest of us as well.

He was able to focus for an entire hour and a half,

yes,

 working diligently and creatively on his final.

Who knew?

Amy Wang put tons of energy into her piece with several really awesome focal points,

and Anushka Panjwani really takes off as well using lines with lots of energy.

Again both girls working with the cool side of the wheel.

Thank you all for your effort,

but more importantly on a personal level,

thank you for coming in to check on me after my fall.

You support, hugs and love helped me heal faster so I could get back to work,

doing what I love to do,

teach art.

to these crazy 1st Quarter 7th graders.

What a handful they were!

Gotta be honest,

a challenging group with lots of squirrels,

but that's the way the 1st Quarter always is

 because the kids are getting adjusted to being in this new

 7th grade more adult environment.

But man oh man, 

there was a lot of raw talent in this bunch,

and I hope many of them will be back for more art.

Just look at those great smiles, 

the kids are having too much fun felting their soap scrubs.

Now let's check out their Watercolor Blobs,

their Final for the 8 weeks with me.

Chloe Choi you must come back for more art.

You are a natural, this piece says it all.

Talent & creativity.

great balance & color scheme going on in this composition.

Plus it's just so much fun!

Ashley Yang I just love all your little creatures,

and your colors are perfect with lots of great value going on.

Just like I asked for.

You put so much great energy into developing it to it's fullest.

CREATURE FEATURE

7TH GRADE ART WHEEL - 2015-2016 4TH QUARTER

This is always a terrific assignment to end with for the 7th graders.

They love it!

It actually keeps them quiet & busy for a whole two hours,

not an easy task.  LOL

I have them pick a color scheme to work within.

Then they mix their watercolors to that scheme in their palette, 

drop clean, clear water onto their paper,

 then splatter, dip & drop the paint onto the paper.

Fun times at Whitney High!

This would be accomplished the day before the 2 hour testing final period.

On the day of the 2 hour final,

when the paint is dry,

 they turn their paper every which way

 & use a fine felt tip marker and find creatures to highlight.

They can also come in with colored pencil to bring up values,

add texture and details.

One of my personal favorites was this first one up top by Robbi Cayabyab.

By choosing a Primary color scheme

 and with the water moving around on the paper 

he is also getting secondary color mixtures.

How beautiful is that! 

This next adorable one belongs to Sachi Nandedkar.

I also ask the kids to bring in some Zentangling with their markers.

Look closely and you will see a lot of great doodling by Sachi.

We all loved the pinks and purples that Vianni Villanueva got with her Primary color scheme.

Notice she left out the Primary color Yellow?

By doing that she got a lot of purple mixtures

as well as sky blues & soft pinks with the extra water on the paper.

Lots of great value ranges.

My eye was caught by Helaena Ebalobor's piece.

I love the text she brought in and how she curved it

and arranged it from small to large.

Great critical thinking!

We end with Shukthi Senthilraj and her Primary colorway.

Love, love , love all the creatures she found and how full and balanced her piece feels.

She had a lot of great shapes to work with,

and actually still does! 

She could do even more if she wanted.

I hope your parents frame these sweet little pieces up,

they are tiny masterpieces.

The 7th graders love to end the quarter with these crazy blobs.

Mixing up a color scheme then dropping it into water on watercolor paper is so much fun.

But the best part is after it dries,

turning it in all 4 directions,

and finding buried creatures and making them come alive with a fine point marker.

Then let's bring in a bit of colored pencil to put in a little value & texture,

plus some zentangling for interest.

This is the last post for my 2nd Quarter Art Wheel kiddos.

Yesterday I said good bye to my 3rd Quarter wheel group

 and welcome to my last 7th grade group of the year.

This is all going by so quickly.

But what a wonderful assignment to end with .

Let's see who did what.

One of my favorites was made by Stella Hong.

I really loved her use of color and value.

I also felt the piece was well balanced with a lot of interesting characters.

And of course all her Zentangling really makes the piece pop.

In this next one by lovely Lucy Acuna I really like how the blob animals circle around the center,

almost as if they are following the hungry caterpillar.

There is also a good amount of texture brought in thru the zentangling.

Also note how different Lucy's watercolor went down then Stellas.

You could do this assignment a million times and never get the watercolor blobs the same.

I like that!

I feel this next one is a bit more scary and sinister

which really suits the color scheme.

Jainee Shah has thrown in a lot of great detail which really holds my eye on the piece

for a more sophisticated effect.

And this piece by Emmanuel Alvarez was another favorite of mine.

It's just so cool with this skateboarder character being chased by the crock.

So much FUN!

And we end with this striking work by Alexa Centeno.

The kids had to be able to name their color scheme,

and the kids rarely pick secondary but it is always delightful to the eye.

So great pick Alexa!

She was also able to get a lot of nice range of value within the watercolor,

and find some really playful creatures.

I wish you could see how hard these children work on these pieces.

It's a 3 hour process from beginning to end.

I start them the day before the final and we put down the watercolor.

Then the next day I have them in for their 2 hour final.

These are very social 7th graders who I've taught to access the non-verbal right side of their brains.

It's a beautiful thing to witness;

30 7th graders being non-verbal for 2 full hours,

working and perfecting these till the bitter end.

And for those of you who have never had the pleasure of working with 7th graders,

that's a pretty big feat to keep them focused and on task for that long a period of time.

I'm usually holding my breathe as we approach the end of that final,

cuz there is nothing worse than having nothing for them to do that last 30 minutes.

7th graders are a squirrely bunch  :)

7TH GRADE ART WHEEL 1ST QUARTER - 2015-2016

These are always so much fun to share.

We start by splattering watercolor over student grade watercolor paper.

And then on the day of the final (2 hour block of time)

we go back into them and try to find imaginary animals and people/monsters/creatures.

The more the better.

I ask the young ones to bring in at least 2 other media besides watercolor 

that they've learned to work in in the past 8 weeks.

Most of them picked pen & ink,

but if you look closely you will also see some oil pastel and charcoal.

Occasionally they will also bring in some graphite or colored pencil.

Above you are seeing the entire class's work.

Now let's take a closer look.

One of my personal favorites was done by Maria Miranda.

I love the color scheme she has chosen to work in (secondary),

and I feel her faces are all so sweet and happy.

This next one by Bryant Huang was a class favorite.

Everyone enjoyed his bold color choices,

how he balanced his composition and the quirky animals he found.

I love this next one as well by Laura Gholmieh

I like her subdued color scheme

as well as all the Zentangling she brought to the piece.

Shows a lot of effort, focus and patience during that 2 hr. block of time

(a difficult feat for our 7th graders  :)

And check out this adorable one by James Lara. 

 Love the peach colors that are not quite orange,

as well as the splatter.

He's also bringing in terrific craftsmanship with the pen and ink,

and his little figures are charming.

And I think Kenneth Nguyen came up with the most unique creation.

I really like that he brought in so much text.

It almost reads like a map.

Great job young ones!!!
