EASTER EXPLORATIONS

Alumni Daphne Chiang,

 from the class of 2015,

 has a week off from Georgetown

and is exploring the city of Washington D.C. 

This day it was the Renwick Gallery.

As she says,

"It was 3-D art on a huge scale"

9 artists  showing their work and sharing the space.

Her favorite artist was Gabriel Dawe

with this thread sculpture.

That's right,

Next,

one of my favorite artist's works,

Patrick Doughtery with his woven sticks.

I have yet to see one of his sculptures in person.

I'm so jealous Daphne  :)

And this melted & slashed tire sculpture by Chalcaia Booker.

I was telling Daphne that in college in my 3-D art class,

I had to make a tire sculpture.

Wish I had seen one of Chalcaia's pieces for inspiration first.

Mine sucked!  ha ha

NOW THIS IS SERIOUS SNOW

sent these pix of her weather in Washington D.C at Georgetown.

Oh my!!

She said she sank to her knees in it  :)

And that this is her first time in snow like this.

School was even cancelled for 2 days,

oh yeah!!

Here she is center with her girlfriends and their adorable snowman.

DAPHNE'S GIFT

One of my very favorite parts about teaching art is that I get to make demo. pieces

where I stay one day ahead of my students.

I don't believe in working on my students pieces when they have questions;

I like to show them on my own pieces.

This keeps my design mind and my hands crazy busy.

One of my least favorite parts about this job 

is that I rarely take the time to finish my demo. pieces

because keeping this blog going takes up a lot of my free time.

But over the recent winter break I took a 2 week break from the blog 

and worked on a very important piece that I'm really proud of

(be showing it off in a couple of weeks.

But...

keeping my hands busy at stop lights to and from school

I was able to finish my demo. scarf 

for my Knutty Knitters  :) 

Here it is in all it's glory,

WOOOO HOOOOO!!!

This is a shot of it after I blocked it but before I sewed it into an Infinity Scarf.

I worked with two bulky singles yarns that I thrifted at a garage sale.

One was a Noro wool/silk blend from Japan, 

the other a wool from Manos de Uruguay. 

The kids learned nine different knit patterns.

In these close ups you can see many of them.

But the best part was that now that I had a finished piece,

 I was able to gift it to one of my favorite students who graduated last year,

Daphne Chiang,

class of 2015.

I sent it to her at Georgetown University in D.C.

 in the autumn 

when the weather was turning brisk.

SHOUT OUT TO DAPHNE CHIANG IN GEORGETOWN

My girl,

2015 Alumni Daphne Chiang,

is in her first semester at prestigious Georgetown University in Washington , D.C., 

and loving every second of it.

She's making a great group of new friends,

and visiting the sites,

Her class load is an interesting mix of classes from Disability Studies, 

Microeconomics, 

Religious Studies (the Problem of God),

Chinese III,

Operating Informational Management Systems,

to Ethic Entrepreneurship.

Daphne tells me her days are definitely engaging.

In addition,

 she has joined the Ballroom Dance Team

 and is headed into her first competition with her partner here.

She tutors two days a week for underprivileged children,

many of whom have just arrived in the U.S. and speak no English.

And she has also joined a consulting organization on campus

 that works with social businesses and non-profits,

helping others to give assistance to people in need. 

Wow, 

this is one busy young woman.

Daphne told me that it's so beautiful in D.C. right now.

The leaves are starting to change and fall is in the air.

Hoping for some of that here in the So.Cal.  :)

Know Daphne,

 that we couldn't be prouder of you  here at Whitney.

You are already touching so many lives.
