Oh boy, 

we have so many beauties it was hard to stop photographing for this post.

What you are seeing are three assignments in one,

collageing the outside of a jewelry box, 

learning 7 different surface design patterns & putting at least 2 together on tissue, 

and making a wire pendant with a personal treasure.

The kids seem to love this

 because we are entering the world of 3-D and craftiness after all the drawing exercises.

I want to start with Eva Matentsian because I felt her box was really eye catching

with her keyhole design rather then just random patterning.

And this one by Serena Lee was simply gorgeous!

I adored her layering of leaf shapes on the lid.

And Alanna Chan made great use of the recycled Vans tissue.

I love how she turned the word all different ways.

Feels a bit like looking into a kaleidoscope.

We are also seeing her stamped tissue done in a Drop Stack pattern.

Emily Ahn has chosen the prettiest color scheme to work in.

And by throwing in a bit of black & white it really makes the design pop more.

And check out her softly patterned tissue as well.

Sai Samatham brought in a lovely rhinestone piece of jewelry that his mother gave him to use.

And he wrapped it so perfectly to show off all the stones.

He even flanged the bale to give it a softer look.

Shaniya Gentry had so much fun picking out all kinds of text for her lid.

And take a peek at the two keys she wire wrapped together for her pendant below.

I'm noticing I'm really missing these 2nd quarter kids

 as I continue to break and reshape

my new batch of 3rd quarter newbies.

Yesterday I had to implement the old seating chart 

to separate groups of friends that don't work well next to each other. 

Afterwards they really seemed to settle down,

especially after I put on the right brain music.

I like the Native American artist Carlos Niki for his soothing flute and piano sounds.

So now I'm looking forward to working with the new kids on the block.

But enough.

 let's get to these boxes.

The kiddos really enjoy the art of collage,

and I enjoy recycling materials from other projects,

so this is a perfect fit for both.

You are also seeing a few peeks inside their boxes to the wire pendants they created,

along with the stamped tissue pattern papers they made.

First off we have the lovely stylings of Clara Kim.

Note her clever wire pendant.

A pretty rock inside a bottle cap.

Clara spent extra time doing both the inside and outside of her box

and picked up some extra credit.

Let's see what Stella Hong did.

Besides bringing in the required text,

I also like how Stella thought to collage down pictures as well.

She has also turned this delicate shell into her pretty pendant.

Everyone loved Parth Patels' stamped tissue pattern. 

I taught the kids 7 different patterns,

and they were allowed to combine them if they wanted to.

 Parth is alternating both stamps and colors in a regular repeat pattern

for a striking design..

Yesenia Navarro combined natural and man-made elements

into an interesting pendant design.

And I really enjoyed Aishwariya Idhayakannan's use of color in her collage.

The kids were responsible for choosing to work in one color scheme only.

Aishwariya picking the cool colors and pulled it off beautifully.

We end with Emmanuel Alvarez.

He chose a complimentary scheme that I felt flowed well 

between his box and the stamped paper.

Great job young ones!!

7TH GRADE ART WHEEL 1ST QUARTER 2015-2016

My students know that anything liquid in my classroom is known as sauce.

So do my children.

When they were younger and we were getting ready to go to the beach,

I'd tell them to sauce themselves up,

meaning to apply their sunscreen.

So in my classroom there is collage sauce (Modge Podge)

and sawdust sauce (glue/water).

Hee hee

Even though Modge Podge is a bit expensive,

I've found it is the best collage sauce on the market.

It's a Polymer Medium that sticks almost anything to anything,

and we go thru a couple hundred dollars worth a year.

It is especially wonderful for Tissue Paper Collage 

as you can see in Shriya Kappagantu's wonderful design above.

I love that she created an image rather than random design.

"Look Ma, No Hands" on the left above was so much fun,

but sadly I didn't write down the name of the maker,

so 7th graders, 

let me know who it belongs to.

Charles Chen is the artist in the middle.

I really like that he used up the tan packing material that I can't bare to throw away,

and Alberto Lozano did the neutral color scheme box on the right.

Nerie Crisologo is the creator of this colorful box,

and it's lovely stamped tissue inside.

I teach the kids 7 different patterns to stamp in ,

and they pick up several to combine in a clever way to stamp their tissue with.

The stamps were carved years ago for another assignment and left behind,

so we re-use them for this assignment.

Bryant Huang picked a Tribal looking stamp for his tissue.

Also notice Bryant's wire wrapped pendant that he made.

Beautifully crafted with a special meaning for him.

I think his story was that he had a clam living in it in his aquarium,

and it died,

so he kept it's shell.

And when I asked the kids to bring something special from home to turn into a pendant,

this is what he brought.

Ahhhh  :)

Alex Min was inspired by the game of Minecraft for his box theme.

He used a Mirror pattern for his tissue,

and made two pendants for his box.

Notice how strikingly beautiful his tissue stamping is!

And lastly we have Amara Ajon.

She chose a box with an interesting lid (see below).

All these boxes are recycled from the staff at my school.

They donate them to me after the Holidays.

I go thru at least 120 every year,

and I'm running out.

HELP!!!

Amara has chosen an Analogous color scheme to work in

(there are 8 color schemes they can choose from)

and I really like how she has stamped her paper.

Part of it is in a random overlapping pattern 

which creates wonderful values,

and above that she is in a regular alternating pattern.

Well designed kiddo!

We are almost to the end of my First Quarter 7th Graders.

I know my Second Quarter kids are getting antsy to see their work up on the blog.

Yep, missing you young ones BIG TIME, but so glad many of you are stopping by to visit.

Love both Sara Ryave's box and pendant (above and below).  Her choice of colors, paper and textures really worked for me, and what a clever girl to use a safety pin as her pendant base. 

Madison Greenwald knocked it out of the park with her bold text and colors, whereas Ann Luong used a much more subtle approach, and was able to achieve just as satisfying a result (below).

Kyra Zazueta made this box above with her mother in mind. 

Divya Cowgill also has her mother as inspiration below. 

 Also check out Divya's clever pendant, how she is incorporating shells and buttons.

Next we have Mary Poppins' inspired text above by Stephany Arciga in a very pretty colorway.   You can also see her alternating stamped pattern in regular repeat.

I was so pleased how several of my students chose to use buttons in their pendants.  I love re-purposing buttons whenever I can, especially those belonging to family members who are gone now.

7th Grade Collage Boxes with Stamped Tissue and Wire Pendants - Student Art

So I am nearing the end of another great group of 7th graders, 3rd quarter finals are almost here. The young ones just finished up their colorful collaged boxes that house their pretty stamped tissue paper and lovely wire pendants. What a great gift these are going to make for Mother's Day. The boxes above belong to Nathan Kim and Payal Morari. I really like how Kellie Zhao used a neutral color scheme which creates a powerful statement in the box below. We can just see her pendant peeking out.

Love the cool spring colors that Amy Igarashi chose for her box above. Both Amy and Kellie show a lot of artistic potential and I'm looking forward to having them back for more art classes.

The 3 boxes above belong to Valiera Gasca, Melissa Lanto and Alan Jahic. All 3 of these kids did a beautiful job with their collaging and their craftsmanship.

Here is a peek at Melissa's stamped tissue and pendant, and below you can see how Vivy (Valiera) has wire wrapped her pendant, both girls having done an outstanding job.

And look how Sharon has color coordinated her entire package from the color of her stone to all the colors she brought into her tissue and collage. Beautiful work class!

7th Grade Art Wheel - Wire Pendants with Patterned Stamped Tissue

The most difficult assignment this year for my sweet 7th graders has been the wire pendant project. They were asked to bring in an interesting rock, shell or charm, and then I showed them how to use pliers and wire cutters to capture the object within the wire so that it looked aesthetically pleasing and well crafted. They were also allowed to embellish with other things like smaller beads, charms and stones. It was rough going at times, but eventually all 30 of them were able to finish a pendant that we then strung onto ribbon or a chain they had brought in from home. The pieces actually turned out quite well considering how much they struggled with this small motor skills task. The piece above belongs to Smruthie Maganti and is one of the more sophisticated ones. I'm finding out that Smruthie is an amazing designer and craftswoman and I'm hoping she will come back and take more art classes with me. Hint, Hint! :)

You are also seeing glimpses of their collaged boxes that I posted last week along with another unit we did in conjunction with this one, Stamped Patterns on Tissue Paper. I taught them some surface design with carved rubber erasers, and 7 different patterns that they could stamp out. After practicing all 7, they chose a color tissue that would work visually with their boxes and stamped out their favorite patterns. This tissue was then used to line the boxes with and to provide a beautiful tease before you see the pendant underneath. The 3 pendants above were done by Evelyn Aldana, Paul Dean Versteeg III, and Lizzy Krueger, and the box and tissue below was done by Katy Uchiyama.

Karisma Dev did the box, tissue and pendant above, and Eduardo Jacinto and Matthew Bautista did the pieces below.

And these last two were done by Ju Eun Lee and Deborah Gordillo. Fantastic job class!
