Another global skill,

conquered! 

The kids learned 10 decorative stitches to put together these sweet little pieces,

along with sewing on a button and a few beads.

Of course they practiced learning on another felt piece,

then they worked out a design that would incorporate all 10 of these stitches.

We all agreed that junior Lynette Lee had made the class favorite.

With junior Margaret Yiu close behind.

We also loved the delicate stylings of senior Sarah Woo.

And we adored junior Jillian Morris's clever bicycle.

I was particularly fond of junior Rachel Kannampuzha's booklet

that opened up to reveal her "Under the Sea" theme.

Way to conquer just one more global skill.

LEARNING A NEW GLOBAL SKILL...

EMBROIDERY BASICS

BEGINNING 3-D ART

is extremely difficult.

There will be a struggle,

the feeling that you will never "get it",

wanting to quit,

and then finally comes the "aha" moment,

when it becomes EASY.

So much of teaching art involves learning new global skills,

and that's why so many think they aren't artistic because they quit too soon, 

before they get to the "aha" moment.

So let's see what these young ones accomplished 

because I wouldn't let them quit.  :)

Rarely is the work small enough that I can show off the whole bunch,

but these little samplers are pretty small,

and I wanted to show off the variety of results achieved.

And even though they are small there is a lot of content.

They contain evidence of all the stitches they learned:

running stitch, 

back stitch, 

french knots,

blanket/buttonhole,

chain & detached chain,

the fly & stem stitches,

satin & whip stitches,

beading & button attaching.

You can clearly see all of these below on senior Hapshiba Kwon's piece.

Her's was the class and one of my favorites.

Absolutely delightful design.

Next is senior Jenna Llamas.

I love that she thought to put a headband and necklace

on her young woman,

such a special touch.

And her handwork is quite beautiful.

Check out 8th grader Malia Pulido's work.

She has some of the best craftsmanship in the class,

and is one of the youngest.

And what a great design!

 I felt that senior Jordin Toney created one of the most interesting compositions

using ball gowns as her subject.

Clever!

And how cute and sweet is this one by  8th grader Iris Lin.

Another 8th grader,

Elliana Lee,

created this adorable design above.

I really feel a sense of movement in this next one by Cheryl-Mae.

Placing elements on the diagonal is a powerful tool in design.

Now we come to Whitney High School English Teacher Deliana Park, 

who during her free conference period,

is taking the class with the kids.

She enjoyed learning to stitch so much that she created two works.

And not only the fronts but she wanted to cover the messy knots on the backside,

so she finished off the backs as well.

That earned her a lot of extra credit.

This is Deliana's second class with me.  

Several years ago she took my Beginning 2-D class 

and learned to draw, paint and design.

Both the students and I are enjoying her tremendously.

She adds so much fun and playfulness to the class.

Small but mighty,

that's what all of these pieces are.

But first let me tell you what a special group of kids these are, 

a super cohesive group with respect for learning, 

and lots of .positive energy.

I'm really enjoying getting to know these young ones.

During the first quarter of the year I teach the kids about color theory thru tye-dye,

then we move on to learning basic sewing and embroidery skills.

These sweet pieces are showing me they have learned their stitches

 before we apply them to a major assignment.

The top piece I felt was really creative.

I loved how senior Anna Lee cut up 4 background pieces to apply her stitches to,

and that she staggered them.

This next one by senior Evelyn Aldana Padilla flowed with the fall season when she created it.

And I also really enjoy the sense of wind blowing thru her design.

Junior Liana Chie has sewn this lovely bird grouping ,

paying special attention to her two blossoms.

And junior Amber Wu gives us this really gentle soft landscape

which is so very lovely.

Then check out this thought filled work by sophomore Shreya Sheth.

She really has put a lot of work into it as she does with everything she makes.

Felt Pouches - Student Work

I introduced you to my Beginning 3-D kids a few weeks back with their sweet felt embroidered pillows/pin cushions, well these were their finals for 1st Quarter.  

They had to combine all that they had learned about color theory, design and embroidery in this piece, so enjoy.

This top pouch was made by senior Julia Kim and is one of my favorites.

Below hers is the lovely stitching of junior Katelyn Uchiyama.

This adorable UFO is the work of junior Bianca Tolentiono.  Great colors on a striking backdrop.

The cute little Pikachu was made by senior Esther Woo, and the delightful butterfly next to hers belongs to senior Andrew Rim who exhibits amazing craftsmanship skills.

The lovely piece above was done by 8th grader Annie Lin, and below we have seniors Vinisha Kothari with the remarkable mermaid and Dhruvi Chauhan with the atmospheric landscape.

The little cutie above is the work of senior Megan Yeu.  Megan has a great class schedule this year.  She is planning a major in art, so this year she was able to fit 3 of my classes into her schedule, Advanced 2-d, Ceramics I, and Beginning 3-D.  What a great way to go out of here  :) 

And lastly there is junior Charisa Marie Perdon Bloemhof with a picture of her new baby sister.  So sweet!

Felt Pouches - Student Work

I'm loving my new Beginning 3-D kids.  They are working so hard for me and have the most positive attitudes.  I couldn't ask for more.  These pouches were their 1st quarter finals and a culmination of the entire quarter.  We studied color theory thru tye-dye and polymer clay, and also an embroidery unit, then put it all together into these pouches.

This first one (front and back) belong to senior Fernie Jacinto.  I'm sure he made this pouch to give to his girlfriend.  You can even insert a pix into the back clear vinyl piece.  Pretty clever Fernie.  You should put your prom pix from lat year inside.  :)

The front and back of this next cutie belongs to junior Kaya Quarles.  I am enjoying Kaya immensely  and it's so cool, I had her daddy in class years ago.  I'm loving her two little monsters.  Great job Kaya!   

Next we have 8th grader Jenna De La Paz with her very sweet girl.  I've got 3 eighth graders this year who are doing outstanding work; Jenna, Jacqueline and Lauren.  You 3 are keeping up with the older kids.

Below is the work of 10th grader Laarnie Barcelon.  She is coming to me with terrific design skills and tons of energy and effort.  Laarnie, I want you back for the 2nd and 3rd year of 3-D!

Now here is the work of 8th grader Lauren Kennedy.  Told you she was good.  Here you can see the front and back of her pouch.

This first one (front and back) was one of my favorites and done by senior Kasie Le-Nguyen.  I love how she did the background, very clever design kiddo.

This next one was also a beauty by senior May Luong, with great use of color.  May is also in my Beginning 2-D class and excelling there as well.

Below is the backside of senor Priyanka's piece.  So lovely!

Senior Michelle Yoshimoto made this sweet piece above.  Love her use of buttons in the work, and here is my third 8th grader Jacqueline Yu.  Unbelievable what I get out of thee young ones.

Next we have the work of senior Mylan Jefferson who loves the Irish at Notre Dame.  Beautiful work young woman!

And lastly we have senior Jessica Barrett who I had when she was in the 7th grade.  And what a beauty she has grown into.  Jessica does gorgeous work, with impeccable craftsmanship and great attention to detail.  Love that you are back sweet girl!

For EXTRA CREDIT on a piece of paper or fabric, make me a pouch (you can use staples, tape, glue, thread, yarn).  And if you figure out how to make a drawstring I will give you even more points.  On the front side decorate it and on the back side put your name and period, plus pick the pouch you like the best and put the name of the maker on the backside as well.  Whoever gets the most votes also picks up extra credit.  Hand pouch to me when you walk in the door.  Have fun!   

More Felt Embroidery Pieces from My Beginners

The pillows from yesterday were made after these gorgeous flat pieces.  These flat works were my 3-d beginners first attempts at embroidery.  The attention to detail, the incredible designs and the amount of time put into these pieces were truly remarkable.  I love these children.  I love my job, look what I get.  Beauty surrounds me all day long!

I want to start with junior Hannah Park whose piece was one of my personal favorites.  Hannah is gifted in 2-d art as well as 3-d.  You saw many of her works last year on the blog.  Below hers is junior Nikki Shah's.  Nikki is another amazing young artist that I've known and been working with since her 7th grade year.  I'm so glad you are back Nikki.

Two up and coming superstars are juniors Sheila San Agustin above and Phoebe Liu below.  I'm really hoping that both these girls will return to me next year for the 2nd level crafts class.  As you can see they are amazing designers and impeccable craftswomen.

Next we have juniors Alice Zhang whose fun pillow was featured yesterday, above, and Sam Arias below.  I've got my fingers crossed that these two younguns will also come back to me.  Alice is new to me this year and I'm quickly discovering her many talents in the arts, and Sam I've been working with since her 7th grade year.  She is also one of my most talented 2-d kids.

The lovely piece above was made by junior Julia Chanco, and was also one of my favorites this year.  I'm hoping it will be for sale at Open House (hint, hint)  :)  Below we see senior Aparna Vancheswaran's work again because everything she stitches is outstanding.  I will be sad to see you graduating Aparna, but Julia you had better come right on back to me LOL

And lastly we have junior Emily Yang whom I'm also getting to know and love.  What a sweet piece this is Emily.  Your stitching is remarkable and I already know that I've bugged you enough that you will be returning next year.
