that there was at least one more Oil Pastel from the 2nd Quarter Art Wheel group.

Turns out there were two.

What I especially appreciated about these two pieces were that the kids Zentangled over top 

the pastel with pencil point.

It adds so much visual texture and pattern to the art piece

which is always a great thing. 

This top one was the work of Krystal Lin.

I adore her color choices!

And the bottom one belongs to Kayla Vicencio.

Note the way Kayla applied her pastel in her foreground, 

with pointillist marks.

Fabulous!

Also Krystal is working in an Analogous Color Scheme,

and Kayla is using a Primary Color Scheme.

Bravo young ones!

A LONE BUT POWERFUL RANGER

This pastel took my breath away when it was done in the 7th grade class.

I loved everything about it from the diagonal horizon to the textural foreground.

And for me what made it so very sensory was how Koa used her colors

in the sphere then repeated them in the background.

Really sophisticated for one so young!

It always flabbergasts me the level of sophistication that the 7th graders bring to my class.

Like in this oil pastel preliminary by Alia Cortez.

Just breathtaking!

And in this one as well by Emily Ahn.

She is using the pastels in 3 different ways all in one piece for a beautiful composition.

And check out the brilliant use of color and value in this one by Alanna Chan.

Shaniya Gentry went for a bit of extra credit

by using a pencil lead over the oil pastel to add a whole other layer of movement, texture and pattern.

7TH GRADE ART WHEEL - 3RD QUARTER - 2016-2017

Put Oil Pastels in 7th graders hands after a quick demo. and watch them take off.

They love them and visa versa!

Let me show you.

Everyone was really impressed that Pearl Wang turned hers into an ornament,

and created such nice branches as a backdrop,

even managing to put the required cast shadow into those branches.

And Heer Patel went for the extra credit

by Zentangling with a blunt pencil after laying down her background.

Bhumika Kalaimalai created so much movement in her backdrop,

while putting in a lot of value into both her sphere and foreground.

Then balancing her exciting back by bringing texture into her foreground.

We all loved the amazingly realistic teal sphere that Eric Liao put down.

And Tiffany Cheng brings in so much wonderful texture into all sections. 

And very brave Anisha Hemnani was super successful trying her hand at pointilism.

KEEPING UP WITH THE 7TH GRADERS

OIL PASTELS

7TH GRADE ART WHEEL - 2015-2016 2ND QUARTER

It continues to amaze and delight me what I can get out of my squirrelly little 7th graders.

Let's take a gander.

Jayden Vallinas,

who has tremendous potential but doesn't know it yet,

created this beauty.

Yesenia Navarro gave us some cool looking flames in the background,

and Salvador Ortiz his signature clown face.

Stella Hong came up with this very atmospheric foreground.

So pretty Stella!

And Clara Kim is showing us that she has mastered both the pointillist and hatchure techniques.

I leave you with Aaron aka Patrick Amaya whose work has been showcased on this blog several times now this year,

hoping Patrick that you and the others will be back for more art classes in the future.

GLORIOUS COLOR

OIL PATELS

7TH GRADE ART WHEEL - 1ST QUARTER 2015-2016

Some of the richest,

most beautiful color can be achieved with Oil Pastels.

And the 7th graders enjoy them.

My 7th graders were shown 3 different ways to use them;

hatchure strokes, pointillism or coloring like  n a coloring book,

and then were able to practice all and chose one for these little samplers.

This first one by Alex Min was pro!

Amazing technique and use of color.

Loved the striking pink into purple background

 that Rawnie Singh thought to use for her backdrop.

And check out the great cast shadow

 that Nika F. put under and to the right of her sphere,

how believably it blends in to the grass. 

And everyone loved Amara A's cute ladybug.

And we end with Charles Chen's cool planet themed piece.

Fantastic job young ones!!

7TH GRADE ART WHEEL 2014-2015 4TH QUARTER

OMG,

that's right,

these are the work of 7th graders!!!!

So sophisticated for ones so young,

right???

These pieces make me crazy excited  :)

Not only have the little ones grasped the concept of light and shadow,

 but they are also shading in a color scheme they can name.

And then on top of that creating a balanced composition,

and for extra credit throwing in linear texture with lead pencil.

Like the ones above and below by Emma Yang and Megan Ly.

And then check out this one by Adele Sarmiento.

Notice the brave scale she is working to.

Notice the pointillism technique she has researched and is using like Monet.

And the quality is that of a professional.

Stunning!!!!

WORKING WITH COLOR

7TH GRADE ART WHEEL 3RD QUARTER 2014-2015

My 3rd Quarter 7th graders outdid themselves with color choices and drawing skills 

in these oil pastels.

They only had one day to practice and then one day to make these yummy pieces.

This first one by Stacy Min was everyone's favorite.

You would never guess that it was done by one so young.

Next up we have Kayla Kim.

I thought it was very clever of her to include text in this very fun composition.

My favorite was done by Elliana Lee.

The rich colors she combined really called to me.

And I love how she brought so much range of value and interest to her sky and foreground.

Brilliant work all of you!

Like Ducks to Water...

OIL PASTELS

7TH GRADE ART WHEEL 2ND QUARTER

my 7th graders took to the oil pastels,

 and in one day really created some lovely works of art.

Actually it was 2 days,

one day to practice and one day to build their good piece for grading.

I was really impressed with this one above by Ashley Sunwoo.

Very sophisticated for one so young!

Aditi Shahwas inspired by a piece Whitney alum David Hyun made back in the day,

and put the beaker bottle with it's bubbles in a really rich landscape.

Love the scale that Jeffrey Hwang drew to in his work above,

and Katelyn Chu did the same with her very dimensional looking heart.

But my favorite of all were these sweet cherries done by Seth Sapinoso.

Love his color choices which makes the piece pop

 as well as his slightly abstract quality of the cherries.

Almost feels like an oil painting rather then pastels.

OIL PASTELS WITH ZENTANGLING

4TH QUARTER 7TH GRADERS

Cutie patootie Sahana Ramesh gives us this vibrant piece with wonderful zentangling going on in the background.

Cat woman Emma Canteno does not disappoint as she manages to put her signature kitten in her piece.

And what a lovely landscape she's got going on.

Another talent in the class is Liam Abalos.

His pastel really stood out as well.

I really like how he thought to fracture his sphere.

Ananya had a great 8 weeks in the class and created many lovely works such as the one above.

And Queena Hoang has come up with this highly unique background color that really sets her piece apart

Zentangling into Oil Pastel

7TH GRADE PRELIMINARY OIL PASTELS

3RD QUARTER 7TH GRADERS 2013-2014

Because my 7th graders learned to Zentangle in an earlier unit, I had them give it a try over top their oil pastels just for an extra credit opportunity, and this is what I got.  

Really rich, vibrant spheres with interesting surface design that holds the eye.

Young Ethan Marcus made this delightful ball that he gave importance to by elevating it on a pedistal , and sweet Rachel Tibayan did the pretty pink ball below.

The kids were able to choose between working in pointillism or hatchure strokes.  

And the zentangling was done with a dull pencil lead.

Olivia Krueger chose dots above, and Suzaine Thomas strokes below.

And this icy blue ball was created by Taylor Genera.

Pretty darn impressive for these young ones!

7th Grade Oil Pastel Spheres

2ND QUARTER 7TH GRADERS

I was really thriklled this quarter how well the kids took to the oil pastels, as well as the results.  These are a few.  Enjoy!

This top one belongs to an exceptionally talented young 7th grader by the name of Sara Ryava.  I could always count on Sara to come up with an interesting scenario to work into her compositions.

Minh Dinh was also a superstar in the class, and he has given us a lovely solution with great color choices.

And lastly Andrew Kui has done this very subtle, monochromatic work that feels very calming.

I'm hoping that all 3 of you will come back to me for more art classes in the future.

7th Grade Oil Pastel

My 4th Quarter group from last school year got really creative with their oil pastel spheres.Michelle Hwang asked if she could turn her sphere into a cube, you betcha!!

I'm so sad to say that I don't have a name for either of these next two works, but I still had to show them because of their creative designs.

And this last one I'm pretty sure is the work of Dea Kunika.  Even though the design is more traditional, the craftsmanship is outstanding!!
