Oh boy, 

we have so many beauties it was hard to stop photographing for this post.

What you are seeing are three assignments in one,

collageing the outside of a jewelry box, 

learning 7 different surface design patterns & putting at least 2 together on tissue, 

and making a wire pendant with a personal treasure.

The kids seem to love this

 because we are entering the world of 3-D and craftiness after all the drawing exercises.

I want to start with Eva Matentsian because I felt her box was really eye catching

with her keyhole design rather then just random patterning.

And this one by Serena Lee was simply gorgeous!

I adored her layering of leaf shapes on the lid.

And Alanna Chan made great use of the recycled Vans tissue.

I love how she turned the word all different ways.

Feels a bit like looking into a kaleidoscope.

We are also seeing her stamped tissue done in a Drop Stack pattern.

Emily Ahn has chosen the prettiest color scheme to work in.

And by throwing in a bit of black & white it really makes the design pop more.

And check out her softly patterned tissue as well.

Sai Samatham brought in a lovely rhinestone piece of jewelry that his mother gave him to use.

And he wrapped it so perfectly to show off all the stones.

He even flanged the bale to give it a softer look.

Shaniya Gentry had so much fun picking out all kinds of text for her lid.

And take a peek at the two keys she wire wrapped together for her pendant below.

Wow,

we only have 7 or 8 more weeks of school left 

and I'm only still posting 2nd Quarter posts.

Seems like every year I get more and more behind schedule.

So 7th graders,

 bare with me as I try to get to you 3rd quarter kiddos.

Let's see these stunning boxes and pendants.

We start with Felicia Hidalgo with her Inspired theme box.

Loving that light blue mixed with the black and white tissue.

And her pendant is so well  crafted.

Bravo young lady!

Samantha Catacutan uses an Analogous Color Scheme for her very pretty box.

And we loved her stamped tissue.

She found the coolest leaf stamp to use in an Alternating Pattern.

And the class favorite was this black and white themed box,

stamping and pendant that all flow so well together by Samantha Becaria.

This beautiful box in a Cool and Analogous Color Scheme was done by Katelyne Gonzalez.

I really like that textured purple pattern paper she found to incorporate in her lid.

Really makes this box pop.

And we end with Keilani Alejandro and her Live Laugh & Love box.

I feel like she picked a stamp that feels very Hawaiian when Mirrored with itself.

It reminds me of a traditional Hawaiian needle turned quilt I bought in the islands several years ago.

And how well that goes with her turtle pendant.

7TH GRADE ART WHEEL - 1ST QUARTER - 2016-2017

We start with the Wire Pendant first.

The kids bring in something special to them 

and learn how to wire wrap it into a necklace pendant.

Then comes the tissue paper collaged jewelry box with added text.

And finally they learn about pattern and texture,

pick out a couple carved stamps from years past that look good together 

and stamp a piece of tissue in colors and designs that work well with their box.

They must be able to name their color scheme they worked in, 

and the pattern/s they stamped.

Here we go.

I really like the bits of silver that make this box lid sparkle

 and go so nicely with the heart pendant inside by Chloe Choi.

Wish that heart was in better focus.

Sorry about that Chloe..

What a cool pendant this Universal Studios pin made.

It's the creation of Neil Tendolkar.

And one of my favorite pendants was this cutie by Sofia Matthews.

The kids were required to bring text into the lid area

 and I really like how Risha Cenidoza printed out the word "LOVE" to use.

Her stamped tissue is also quite well done.

These next two beauties that look so good side by side

 belong to Alexis Raquino. & Ankitha Venguswarmy.

I really like the look of that neutral text paper on the one on the right.

I wouldn't have thought to bring that in,

 but it works.

And this last one was a class favorite because of the way the colors pop.

Almost looks like bumble bees moving around.

in finding the perfect papers /colors to collage together.

in finding the perfect something to wire wrap.

in figuring out the perfect patterns to stamp together.

There is just so much that goes into a design.

Sometimes it's innate,

sometimes learned.

In this first one by Samantha Yamaguchi, 

I adore her color choices on the box lid,

sensory & powerful,

as well as her glass blown turtle she brought in to wire wrap.

Beautifully done Sam!

Next we have this awesome tribal design that Taylor Kim has stamped on her gift wrap,

as well as the tiny beads & charm she thought to bring in to add to her shell wire wrap.

And in Shukthi Senthilraj's lid,

 it's the dimensional tissue she has put on top of her box,

and the gutsy move to limit her color scheme to neutrals.

BRAVO

I have a tendency to call anything liquid sauce;

Suntan lotion, Modge Podge, Sawdust glue for clay, etc.

Hence,

"I'm going to sauce myself up for the pool", or

"You need more sauce under your tissue paper",

and so forth.

I buy Modge Podge "sauce" by the gallon,

and between all my classes we probably go thru at least $500 a year,

possibly more.

But it's the best product I've found for collage.

The trick is to use it under whatever you are collaging down, 

then over it.

So let's see what these kids sauced. 

This first one is so much fun 

and was made by Ayaan Ekram,

a very "creative" young man.

Leanne Alcoy used a really beautiful colorway plus touches of gold randomly placed

which brings a bit of movement into the design.

And super clever how she angled the sides of her white text paper.

Love it Leanne!

With Jack Manalo & Loren Kim we also see inside their boxes to their lovely pendants.

This assignment was 3 projects in one:

Collaged Boxes, Stamped Tissue and Wire Pendants.

They learned a lot plus they ended up with a great gift to give.

Enedina  Hu Loera used a Cool or Analogous color scheme.

She brings in a positive message,

and her tissue paper stamping is fabulous.

7th graders,

can you name the patterns she put together?

Alternating Stamps as well as Colors, 

Mirroring & Regular Repeat.

7TH GRADE ART WHEEL - 2ND QUATRTER - 2015-2016

I'm noticing I'm really missing these 2nd quarter kids

 as I continue to break and reshape

my new batch of 3rd quarter newbies.

Yesterday I had to implement the old seating chart 

to separate groups of friends that don't work well next to each other. 

Afterwards they really seemed to settle down,

especially after I put on the right brain music.

I like the Native American artist Carlos Niki for his soothing flute and piano sounds.

So now I'm looking forward to working with the new kids on the block.

But enough.

 let's get to these boxes.

The kiddos really enjoy the art of collage,

and I enjoy recycling materials from other projects,

so this is a perfect fit for both.

You are also seeing a few peeks inside their boxes to the wire pendants they created,

along with the stamped tissue pattern papers they made.

First off we have the lovely stylings of Clara Kim.

Note her clever wire pendant.

A pretty rock inside a bottle cap.

Clara spent extra time doing both the inside and outside of her box

and picked up some extra credit.

Let's see what Stella Hong did.

Besides bringing in the required text,

I also like how Stella thought to collage down pictures as well.

She has also turned this delicate shell into her pretty pendant.

Everyone loved Parth Patels' stamped tissue pattern. 

I taught the kids 7 different patterns,

and they were allowed to combine them if they wanted to.

 Parth is alternating both stamps and colors in a regular repeat pattern

for a striking design..

Yesenia Navarro combined natural and man-made elements

into an interesting pendant design.

And I really enjoyed Aishwariya Idhayakannan's use of color in her collage.

The kids were responsible for choosing to work in one color scheme only.

Aishwariya picking the cool colors and pulled it off beautifully.

We end with Emmanuel Alvarez.

He chose a complimentary scheme that I felt flowed well 

between his box and the stamped paper.

Great job young ones!!

SAUCE IT UP!

7TH GRADE ART WHEEL 1ST QUARTER 2015-2016

My students know that anything liquid in my classroom is known as sauce.

So do my children.

When they were younger and we were getting ready to go to the beach,

I'd tell them to sauce themselves up,

meaning to apply their sunscreen.

So in my classroom there is collage sauce (Modge Podge)

and sawdust sauce (glue/water).

Hee hee

Even though Modge Podge is a bit expensive,

I've found it is the best collage sauce on the market.

It's a Polymer Medium that sticks almost anything to anything,

and we go thru a couple hundred dollars worth a year.

It is especially wonderful for Tissue Paper Collage 

as you can see in Shriya Kappagantu's wonderful design above.

I love that she created an image rather than random design.

"Look Ma, No Hands" on the left above was so much fun,

but sadly I didn't write down the name of the maker,

so 7th graders, 

let me know who it belongs to.

Charles Chen is the artist in the middle.

I really like that he used up the tan packing material that I can't bare to throw away,

and Alberto Lozano did the neutral color scheme box on the right.

Nerie Crisologo is the creator of this colorful box,

and it's lovely stamped tissue inside.

I teach the kids 7 different patterns to stamp in ,

and they pick up several to combine in a clever way to stamp their tissue with.

The stamps were carved years ago for another assignment and left behind,

so we re-use them for this assignment.

Bryant Huang picked a Tribal looking stamp for his tissue.

Also notice Bryant's wire wrapped pendant that he made.

Beautifully crafted with a special meaning for him.

I think his story was that he had a clam living in it in his aquarium,

and it died,

so he kept it's shell.

And when I asked the kids to bring something special from home to turn into a pendant,

this is what he brought.

Ahhhh  :)

Alex Min was inspired by the game of Minecraft for his box theme.

He used a Mirror pattern for his tissue,

and made two pendants for his box.

Notice how strikingly beautiful his tissue stamping is!

And lastly we have Amara Ajon.

She chose a box with an interesting lid (see below).

All these boxes are recycled from the staff at my school.

They donate them to me after the Holidays.

I go thru at least 120 every year,

and I'm running out.

HELP!!!

Amara has chosen an Analogous color scheme to work in

(there are 8 color schemes they can choose from)

and I really like how she has stamped her paper.

Part of it is in a random overlapping pattern 

which creates wonderful values,

and above that she is in a regular alternating pattern.

Well designed kiddo!

We are almost to the end of my First Quarter 7th Graders.

I know my Second Quarter kids are getting antsy to see their work up on the blog.

7TH GRADE ART WHEEL 2014-2015 4TH QUARTER

It's almost time for school to start 

but I still have so many posts to share from this past school year.

So to all my students who have been patiently waiting 

to see if I'm going to post something of yours...

hang in there.

Going as fast as I can.  :)

But 7th graders, 

I did forget who did which box.

But wait,

 Malia Pulido is coming to my rescue.

Thank you Malia!!!!

She says the top middle one is Kimberly's with the theme

"Love One Direction".

And next to hers on the right is Dave's.

(when we get down the mt. & home I will fill in the last names)

I really like how these kids all brought in a lot of picture and text resources from home.

It shows me they were excited and anxious to design their boxes.

Still not sure who this next one above belongs too.

But notice the very cool pattern that was stamped onto the tissue?

An alternating mirrored design.

Malia tells me that Micah is the creator of this next beauty.

A gorgeous color scheme,

a clever turtle shell pendant,

and a striking sun motif stamped pattern. 

And lastly we think this last box is the work of Jana.

She has used a secondary color scheme and matched her stamped paper

 and wire pendant so that the whole flows as one.

IT'S THE WHOLE ENCHILADA

WIRE PENDENTS W/ COLLAGED BOX & STAMPED TISSUE

7TH GRADE ART WHEEL 3RD QUARTER 2014-2015

These pendants and boxes always turn out beautifully,

and are a popular assignment with the 7th graders.

The wire wrapping is a bit frustrating at first

 so I have them do a practice piece first around a bit of rock.

Then I have them bring in something special from home for the second try.

Jillian Sarreal wrapped this gorgeous piece of jewelry that she brought from home.

And I also really like her randomly stamped tissue design.

Vania Oguri got creative and made her own piece to wrap, 

a heart from foil.

That might be a really cool idea to have the kids do next year.

Thanks Vania for the inspiration!

And notice as well her heart stamped tissue, 

great visual flow.

BritneyWu created my favorite stamped tissue design using a mirrored design.

I teach the kids the 7 basic pattern designs:

Regular Repeat, Irregular, Drop Stack, Random, Alternating, Overlapping, and Mirroring.

We use rubber gum erasers to stamp with.

The designs have been craved by previous classes or my T.A.s.

Sadly,

I only have the 7th graders for 8 weeks or else I'd have them carve their own. 

Kayla Kim made this exquisite pendant above.

She brought in a lovely shell

 and did an impeccable job wrapping it.

And Meera Stackhouse worked in a pretty purple and gold color scheme to create her box and paper. 

I also really like her double pendant drops. 

So delicate.
