Senior Samantha Tun,

the lone ranger in this 3rd year level class last year,

had to find a gorgeous photo of a landscape and blow it up onto an 14" by 17"paper,

then draw/paint it in oil pastel.

She did a glorious job with her color choices and transitional areas.

I especially enjoyed her rendering of the wood pier.

Here is Sam below checking proportions and balance as she builds the piece.

All my 2-D kids are required to do this before they turn in a composition.

Do they all do it?

No.

But I encourage them to.

Your gut never lies.

It will tell you from a distance if something feels off.

They have to learn to trust their inner artist.

Using water based pastels, Megan has captured this mountain landscape beautifully.  It just seemed to flow out of her as she worked.

Oil Pastel Land/Urbanscape - Student Work

This year senior Laura Kadi is my sole Advanced 2-D student.  She is in a class with my Beginning and Intermediate 2-D young ones, and oftentimes has to fend for herself as I am so occupied with my other two groups.  Thankfully Laura is self-motivated and needs no push to work her pieces out. She has been my art student since her 7th grade year and is a pleasure to work with. 

For this assignment Laura had to find a great resource to work from; the subject, a land or urbanscape.  Laura found this colorful photograph and decided to split her subject into 3 horizontal bands, just for something different.  She was inspired by local collage art student Andrea Ruygt's piece below.

Laura was required to work to a larger scale then she was used to 18" by 24"  in oil pastel.  This is her second attempt at oil pastel, her first was 6 years ago in her 7th grade year in my Beginning 2-D class.l

Last school year she choose water based pastel over oil when she did her Frontal Fracture portrait below of Marilyn Monroe.

 I'm so very pleased with the intensity and richness of her colors in her landscape .  Many kids want to smear the pastel to blend their values but just end up making their pieces look muddy.  I'm so glad Laura resisted this.  Your can see her stroke marks and I find that very textural and appealing.  I'm also very proud to announce that Laura has decided upon a major in Art History.  I'm hoping she will combine her studio skills with her historical knowledge and perhaps go into art restoration.  She has the patience of a saint and that will take her far in that field.  Good luck sweet girl, I love you!  

The Artwork of Andrea Ruygt

A couple months ago the Drawing Board Gallery in Yorba Linda was showcasing the artwork of students form Cal State Long Beach and Cal State Fullerton.  And I really like the paintings by Andrea Ruygt.  So much so that I purchased the portrait below.  Her style in  both paintings feels really good to me, there is a lot of movement created thru the brushstrokes, and her color choices are very sensory to me.  I also really like how the piece directly below tells a story, and how it's divided on the canvas.  Highly interesting to me.  In fact, it inspires for an upcoming assignment for senior Laura Kadi who is in my Advanced 2-D class.  Oh boy Laura, it's gonna be good!  LOL 

The portrait that I purchased below is about 36" by 40".

On March 16th The Drawing Board Gallery in Yorba Linda, Ca. will be hosting a non-profit gala event and art auction to raise funds to go out into the community to families that can't afford or get to places of arts education to give them performing and visual arts.  We are having food trucks, art action, musical theater show, dessert bar and art tables for people to create!  Cost is 25 dollars.  We are also looking for sponsors!

A Little Wine...a Little Paint..

and then maybe a little more wine at 'Wine and Canvas' in Pasadena.  That's where my son and his girlfriend, Nicole, went for a fun date night out.  They were there for about 3 hours and managed to get an entire landscape completed.  Not bad for a couple of amateurs   :)  

Here's a close up of Zach's and below is Nicole's.  What's cool is that even though they had guided instruction, they each have their own individual style.

Way to go you two!

 It was a bit pricey at $35 per person, and they had to bring their own wine, but they still had a great time.

Oil Pastel Landscape - Student Work

Now that junior Cindy Kim is the Lone Ranger in the 3rd year 2-d class, (Sam transferred to Gahr High), she is really able to focus on her art and recently she turned in this breathtaking landscape done in oil pastel.  cindy learned how to use the pastels in my Beginning 2-d class, and then used them again last year in the 2nd level class.  I'm so proud of you Cind; you've nailed your style.  You are working so hard and producing such beautiful pieces. 

Cityscapes/Urbanscapes/Landscapes - Student Art

It's been awhile, but I think these beauties were done during the third quarter by 2 students from my Advanced 2-D Art class. The top one was created by junior Jason Kwon and was a show stopper at Open House Nite because he was able to capture not only amazingly vivid colors but movement as well within oil pastel. The bottom one was also spectacular and was done by senior Hannah Park. The kids had a choice between using oil or water based pastel. I'm pretty sure Hannah also used oil. Hannah, if you are reading my blog this summer, let me know for sure, would ya? :)
