1 POINT PERSPECTIVE BOX CONSTRUCTIONS

It is such a pleasure for me to show off the incredibly gifted art talents in my 2nd year 2-D class.

Two of these three senior girls are off to our top art school in the country,

Art Center of Design in Pasadena.

All 3 girls went so far over their minimum requirements for this assignment.

I love when the kids push themselves so.

The minimum was a 3 box construction in graphite with a light source and cast shadows.

Let's see what they did.

We start with Sarah Oh,

bringing in her distinctive cats and fish that are present in many of her pieces.

She balances the piece thru Approximate Symmetry and by watercoloring only the cats.

Sarah has also brought in the prefect amount of pen & ink on the cats.

Bravo young woman!

A truly complex piece.

Tiffany Chen creates this magical wonderland,

and moves your eye diagonally thru the work which the eye loves.

I also like the linear repeated texture she has brought into the upper left corner 

that helps to balance out the horned creature.

But the piece that really did it for me was this last one by Mary Kim,

and her 1-point ship.

That alone must have taken her hours,

but it was the paper collage that brought it to life.

She went thru my scrap paper drawer and found this discarded paper towel tye-dye piece. 

She masterfully ripped it into many pieces 

then patiently collaged it back together around the ship.

Also love how she pushed a couple of pieces outside the borderline.

Brilliant work Mary!

STACK YOUR BOXES

1-POINT PERSPECTIVE BOX CONSTRUCTIONS

For the second year students we do an in-depth unit on both 1 & 2-Point Perspective.

We start with the basics then move on to more complex constructions like this.

The requirements were to draw at least 3 boxes in 1-pt.

with two of them touching each then in some way.

Then to shade the piece in using only one light source.

Of course craftsmanship & effort too.

It was totally up to the kids to add whimsy,

a story line, surrealism, etc.

They did all of the above!

We start with senior Jazzerie Lo.

She did a heck of a job drawing that skeleton.

I remember how tough that was to do in my life drawing class in college.

And check out her great cast shadow on the wall.

Next is senior Ayesha Durrani with this adorable take on young love.

And check out this thought provoking piece by senior Malaya Sithichai 

about wearing masks to hide your true emotions or self.

And lastly we end with senior Eileen Lee with these unstable houses.

Dang these kids are deep thinkers!

GETTING THEIR ONE PT. ON

After doing several exercises to learn One Pt. Perspective,

I had my girls create a box construction,

and bring in a light source with highlights and shadow.

Look carefully at each of their shading styles.

Some are more textural than others.

I'm starting with senior Bernice Lin.

Her design is dynamic and really pulls the viewer in along with her strong range of values.

Terrific piece Bernice!

Senior Kyla Balquin pulls us in with her scary and though provoking design.

And senior Katherine Ku sends us a powerful message about the ill effects of smoking.

She also chose to bring in a bit of colored pencil for pop.

And senior Risha Bhakta invites us in for some fun and games.

It's been too long since I've featured my 2-d students.

Sorry you guys.

These pieces are from 1st Quarter done during our Perspective Unit.

Usually we only draw them in pencil but I love that senior Nathan Chong also brought in the perfect amount of pen & ink.

Senior Michael Cantu chose a religious subject with some great cast shadows,

And I really like how he didn't connect the tops of the towers so that they seem like they are floating heavenward. 

Junior Jonathan Hsu really challenged himself with this curved food bar.

I was really impressed with the amount of time and detail he brought in.

More pieces by this group of 5 young men will be coming soon,

Not only are these truly remarkable works, but I also want to show and tell you about our critique process.  This piece above by senior Cathy Luo was wonderful when she turned it in.  But after the class crit, she saw that she could do even more with it.  So it was graded, then she took it home and made it even more amazing.  Below you see the finished product.

Wow, right??  :)  

Do all the students take advantage of this opportunity?  No, but occasionally they will.

  This was senior Justin Hwang's box construction  above in one point.  Love his subject matter and his point of view.  Such a cool piece.   Is there more that he could have done with this one?  Yes.  the two box structures in the background need cast shadows.  will he do it?  We'll see at Open House time.

And then senior Jasmine Zhao blew us out of the water with the amount of time and effort she put into hers.  Look at her attention to detail, extraordinary! 

Senior Alex Lee love's to use military scene's as his subject matter, usually in battle.  We can see fire in the distance and then he burns the edge of the paper to give his piece even more interest and realism.

1 Point Box Constructions - Student Work

Back to my 2nd year 2-D kids.  We did a lot with perspective and shading during the 1st Quarter, and this was one of the exercises.  They had to build a box construction in 1 point with at least 3 box forms, two of which had to be touching in some way.  They also had to shade it in with one light source and include a fore and background.

I love what junior Michaela Platt did with her design, so playful, fun and creative.  She also has a beautiful style developing with a very sensitive touch.

Senior Halah Elsahhar also did a great job with her piece above.Notice how her light source is coming from behind the subjects.

And finally, senior Belinda Wu has really pulled out all the stops with her work.  Incredible attention to detail is her hallmark, and I really like how she wrapped the roped an ribbons thru the borders, so clever.  And it really pulls the piece together.

Here's a close-up of her bird's eye view of her figures.  This is a very difficult view to draw anything in.  But that's why Belinda is a superstar. 

 It's such a pleasure to show off all their work. 

One Point Box Constructions - Student Art

These belong to my new crop of 2nd year Intermediate 2-d art kids. We have been working with one and two point perspective this quarter as well as shading. So these are a few of the one point box constructions. The top one belongs to sophomore Hannah Park, and I think the way she built her trees is brilliant. I also like that her subject matter goes out of her borders. The one below was made by sophomore Sam Arias, and I love that she incorporated her brothers hand prints into the piece, it really works with her subjects.

These are a couple of the pieces turned in recently by my Intermediate 2-d class. The minimum requirement was to build a 1 point box construction that has at last 3 boxes in it, and then to shade it in with a wide range of values using only one light source. The top one done by senior Ashlee Chang was my favorite because I felt she really pushed herself the hardest and came up with a highly creative design. The bottom two were also outstanding works, also showing a good deal of creativity and effort. They were done by seniors Marisela Herrarte and Anne Guu.

My Intermediate 2-d students are currently working on these 1-point box constructions. These two are from last school year and were done by alum Regina T. and Amanda Garcia. Both pieces are highly creative and beautifully crafted. Regina and Amanda, if either of you are following my blog, I miss you guys and hope all is going well at college.
