Ian Paul at The Drawing Board

Yesterday I posted about the college art students that were featured at The Drawing Board Gallery in Yorba Linda recently.  The other artist that caught my attention was Ian Paul.  His work was so much tighter and darker then Andrea Ruygt but it still was really intriguing.  His attention to detail was remarkable as was his use of value.

But it was his crows that really caught my attention.

Especially this one below on cardboard with a bit of pen and ink work.

I feel that Ian has really found his niche' for one so young.

One of these days I hope to find mine.

The Artwork of Andrea Ruygt

A couple months ago the Drawing Board Gallery in Yorba Linda was showcasing the artwork of students form Cal State Long Beach and Cal State Fullerton.  And I really like the paintings by Andrea Ruygt.  So much so that I purchased the portrait below.  Her style in  both paintings feels really good to me, there is a lot of movement created thru the brushstrokes, and her color choices are very sensory to me.  I also really like how the piece directly below tells a story, and how it's divided on the canvas.  Highly interesting to me.  In fact, it inspires for an upcoming assignment for senior Laura Kadi who is in my Advanced 2-D class.  Oh boy Laura, it's gonna be good!  LOL 

The portrait that I purchased below is about 36" by 40".

On March 16th The Drawing Board Gallery in Yorba Linda, Ca. will be hosting a non-profit gala event and art auction to raise funds to go out into the community to families that can't afford or get to places of arts education to give them performing and visual arts.  We are having food trucks, art action, musical theater show, dessert bar and art tables for people to create!  Cost is 25 dollars.  We are also looking for sponsors!

Polymer Clay Class

Owner Jamie Lough of The Drawing Board in Yorba Linda asked me to start teaching a few of her "Art & Wine " classes on Friday nights.  So this summer I taught a 2 hour evening class on polymer basics. 

The gals had a good time and made many nice looking beads and buttons.  Jamie had a small toaster oven there that we fired them in.

Enjoyed taking a Silk Painting Workshop last month with owner Jamie Kough at her Drawing Board Gallery in Yorba Linda.  This is Jamie showing us how to apply the dye onto the silk.

Below is her 1/2 done piece.

She gave us all round silk frames (from Dharma Trading Co.) to work on and a small bottle of gutta (a resist) to outline our design.  I tried silk painting once before and I forgot how difficult it is to control the line width of the resist.

This piece here, done by a fellow class member is coming along nicely as she paints on the dye.

I really liked the intensity that this gal was able to achieve with her paint.  In order to get darker values you have to reapply the paint many times on top of itself.  Kind of a hassle.

This is me getting started and the finished painting below with the gutta still in the silk.  You can see that my outlines were way too thick for the smaller design.  

And here is the finished piece with the gutta removed.  You can see that I lost a lot of my color intensity when the gutta was removed.  This was my second attempt at silk painting and I still have a lot to learn before I can teach this as a unit in my classroom.

Big News!!!

Oh Yeah!!!  The owner of the Drawing Board Gallery in Yorba Linda, Jamie Kough, came to see my students work at our Open House and liked it so much that she is featuring our art students in their very own gallery showing with reception.  Can you believe that???  I'm so excited for my students.  Above is the flyer she sent out over her website to all her peeps.  So please try to come and share this very special exhibit with us and take a peak at how she is displaying our work in her amazing gallery space.  What a treat this is.  The address is:

My First Gallery Show

A little tardy getting these pix up from October 15, but oh well, better late then never, right?

Owner Jamie Kough has done a remarkable job with her new gallery space.  She has so many classes and activities for both adults and children, there is always something fun going on here.  It's called The Drawing Board and you can check out her website for a list of shows and activities at www.drawingboard.info 

Jamie has a real eye for display, and I was really pleased with how beautifully she hung my work.  Notice the roses in the foreground from my honey.  Jimmy encouraged me to do the show but unfortunately he wasn't able to attend because his band was playing a show in Vegas, but he sent roses to the gallery and they were there the night of the show when I walked in. :)

There were several other artists there with me but I've tried to crop the pix so you can see my pieces.  It was kind of a retrospective show for me.  I had work there all the way back from 1976.

I brought in clay, fiber, and mosaic pieces...

and made a couple of sales.  Oh yeah!

A few of my art quilts were made in workshops with famous quilter's such as Ricky Tims and Gwen Marston.

I had over 70 good friends, family, faculty, staff, alum and students that came to support me.  I was overwhelmed and felt so loved.  Thank you all for coming by.  You really made this night very special for me.  A special thank you to alumni Andy Hsieh and Rik Slayman for joining me.

And a very special thank you to my babies, Dan, Zach and Julie for dropping in with your significant others. 

And the best part is that Jamie has asked me to bring in more things for her next show.  Fill you in when I know more...

My First Gallery Show that Counts

Ok, here it goes, I tried this once before when I was 21 years old and it wasn't such a great experience.  So I never got on that horse again till now, some 34 years later.  All because my new husband believes in me and my art work, and he pushed me to try again.  So I truly hope it's well received this time around, but I gotta tell you, I'm soooo scared. 

With that said, I'd love for you to join me for the artist reception on Opening Night this Saturday, Oct 15 from 7 till 9 p.m.  If not, the show is up till December 3.

The gallery, The Drawing Board,  is brand new in Yorba Linda and this is the owner Jamie's first show to put on to the public.  The address is above but basically it's on the corner of Yorba Linda Blvd. and Yorba Ranch Road, in a nice little center.  Other artists will be featured as well, one with baked goods  :)
