NEW ASSIGNMENT INSPIRED BY ALICE FOX & INDIA FLINT

Two of my favorite artists,
UK based artist Alice Fox and Australian/Latvian based artist India Flint,
have inspired me to try a new assignment with my Intermediate 3-D students.

I want to get the kids to experience weaving on a tapestry loom,
(their previous experience in Beg. 3-D was weaving thru wire dimensionaly)
and do a bit of experimenting with found rusty objects like Alice does,
and windfall like India does.

Alice's tapestry looms with weaving in progress.

So today we are warping our looms.
We are using handmade frame looms
that I built 30 some years ago when I started teaching at Whitney.
I'm planning on having them weave up thin bands to experiment on like Alice is doing above.
I look forward to sharing the results later this month.

Here are a few shots from Alice's blog  and book Tide Marks to inspire my young ones.

  2. Rust and weaving both evolve in their own good time ... these will be well worth waiting for

  3. India Flint is not Austrian but a very well known Australian textile artist, specialising in eco dyes from eucalypts in particular.

    1. Thank you Alison for the correction. Done. I know, I'm pretty sure she is Latvian, but because she has resided in Austriala for so long that's how I often refer to her. Years ago I took my first workshop with her in Santa Barbara, California, and she was delightful. Since then I have taken almost all of her amazing on-line workshops and learned so very much from her.

    2. I’m a dual national Australian-Latvian (born by chance in Australia, but very fond of Austria too 😉)…and thank you very much for saying such nice things about me

  4. Hi India, I thought I'd fixed it once from another comment sent in, but obviously I didn't know the spelling of Australian. And I'm so glad you liked my words. Wish I was more of a wordsmith like you though. Sending you love from around the whirled here in Southern California. And as always there is a sweet little home for you to nestle into if you are ever in our part of the state. xoxox
