MORE ON SURFACE DESIGN

WHEEL THROWN BOWLS & PLATES
CERAMICS II
clay, wax resist & glazes

Wax Resist,
a combination of paraffin and motor oil,
is a fantastic tool when used in conjunction with surface design on clay.
Shout out to Aardvark Clay & Supplies in Santa Ana, Ca.,
my source.

In this first piece by senior _____?______,
she has dipped the bowl in our Blue Matte glaze.
Then she painted textured lines on both the in and outside of the bowl with wax resist.
Finally,
she has centered the bowl back on the wheel head,
and while it's spinning away,
she dipped a brush in Cobalt Carbonate and brushed that oxide over top.
The wax resists the oxide to show off the blue matte underneath.
Fabulous,
right?

And in this pretty piece above,
I have to be honest,
I'm guessing it belongs to senior Sameera Ahmad.
I'm also guessing that she dipped her plate either in Transparent or White glaze first,
then painted on her wax design.
Lastly,
she dipped her piece into our Blue Matte glaze.
Another great look!

  1. Oh I do like how the marks on Yasmeen's bowl fade in the middle, as if disappearing down a well.
